Easy Tips for Healthier Hair. For product recommendations, I've provided links to the original manufacturers so you can research ingredients, directions for use, etc. I would not recommend buying anything that can be altered, ie: hair and skin products, from anyone other than the manufacturer or reputable salon that you trust. It's a small investment for healthy hair and skin. It is estimated that 85% of the US has hard water complete with chlorine, iron oxide, calcium, etc. Inexpensive and effective, my fav for decades is by SPRITE SHOWERS lots of choices and info on their website. I also sell them at my salon with a discount and complimentary plumbers tape. If your looking for lots of pressure with a luxury flow, get an ESKIIN (click for discount). I have one and I love it! Costs more but well worth it imo
Treat your hair like a fine fabric. All the scrubbing, rubbing, and heat is a recipe for fade, frizz, and dry hair. If you wash every day, start at every other day, and continue from there. Does your hair feel stiff and/or oily after a couple days? Common reasons is using too much product, and not rinsing hair thoroughly while showering. Use professional products, they are very concentrated, and use less. Be patient, it was hard for me too. And use dry shampoo.(see below for important tip
The best time to apply is as soon as it starts to look oily, and apply before bed. This allows the dry shampoo time to absorb the oil. Shake well as ingredients can separate. Hold 10-12in to avoid over-saturating; apply with a swiping motion directed to scalp area, and only to areas that gets oily. Do not linger, ONE SWIPE EACH SECTION. Shake your head up, down, all around, BUT DO NOT TOUCH IT. Sweet dreams! My favorites are Amika, MorroccanOil, and K18AirWash with patented OdorBIND technology.
This is for colored or natural hair. All hair is exposed to the elements, natural and manufactured...heat from the sun, water, heat styling products, shampoo, and hair coloring, to name a few. I have witnessed stellar results with clients that are consistent with their treatments. My favorite for home care is the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask, it's so quick and easy! I've also had positive feedback on their oil, detox (clarifying) shampoo, and dry shampoo.
But especially before going out in the sun, before swimming, or using irons, a quality oil works to protect your hair by forming a barrier. I have a client that loves driving with her top down, exposing her hair to the Houston sun. We noticed that by adding MorroccanOil before going out greatly reduced dryness and fading significantly. IMPORTANT: If you have light hair, you must use a clear oil. My favs are MoroccanOil Light and K18 oil. Otherwise, your hair will absorb the yellow in the oil.
Before going into the pool, wet your hair (NOT with pool water of course) towel or squeeze dry, and put conditioner on it, do not rinse. Adding a swim cap would be wonderful, but I understand if you just can't do it. After you're done, rinse well ASAP... don't allow the pool water to dry on your hair.
Scalp and hair are two different surfaces. Only apply shampoo to scalp area, and conditioner to the hair shaft. Technically, your hair is not oily, the oil comes from the scalp. Use the specific shampoo and conditioner to treat each separately. Apply conditioner to hair shaft FIRST, then apply shampoo to scalp. OR, just don't use shampoo at all. I have several clients who have done this successfully for years (there's also communities online). FYI: Both oily and dry scalp can cause flakes.
Nothing fades hair color, or causes dry/brittle hair, faster than hot water. You don't wash your vibrant clothing in hot water, this works the same way. Heat is the enemy of hair so try to limit as much as possible. NOTE: If fading is your goal, expediting fading could produce an undesired, uneven result.
If you wash your hair, and/or use any styling products, YOU NEED TO DO A CLARIFYING TREATMENT ON THE REGULAR. My favorite brands for this is MalibuC (advise against use right before hair coloring except Color Prepare) and K18 Detox Shampoo. They have the clarifying remedy for all hair types and issues. IMPORTANT: Dispensing the myth of 'dirty hair', it is best to have a clean, dry, product-free canvas before your hair color appointment.
You need a heat protectant if you use heat to style.
Do not wash for a minimum of 5-7 days after a hair color service, giving your freshly applied color application time to set. It WILL last longer. I've seen with my own eyes that waiting a week slows the fade so much better!
Whether it's hot water, or the sun, heat is the culprit. Especially if you're going to spend prolonged time in the sun, also apply a quality oil or conditioner to the hair that will be exposed.
Everyone can benefit from the use of a sleep cap in addition to your silk pillowcase. Keeps your style in place, and less friction. Please wash your new sleep cap before using, and weekly to prevent bacteria that can cause breakouts, more often if you tend to sweat. Be sure to scroll down and read the reviews. Users have confirmed that using both the pillowcase and cap gives optimum control and health of the hair. For thick, long, and/or curly hair, look for a sleep bonnet, it's not as snug.
An oldie but (still) a goodie. A lot less 'crazy hair' in the morning. Any friction to your hair causes the delicate cuticle layer to open. The smooth surface of a quality/ genuine Mulberry silk pillowcase (there's a lot of fakes online) will keep your hair smoother and healthier. Great for skin too!
